Design

Design for me has always been my art form, growing up with a Mom that went to college to become an artist I hated the fact that I lacked the artistic ability that she had. This was until I realized that to create art, all you need is to be creative and ready to spend time trying to get the hang of InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator. So that's what I did for the past three years. These are examples from my three years of being an editor.

Sophomore Year

This was my first year as an editor, and before the year started I never understood truly how to use InDesign, I knew how to put text and a box on the page but other than that, I learned through trial and error. Before becoming an editor, I attended the MIPA summer workshop and took the News Editors class, through this I learned how to organize a page and how to come up with different ways to present an idea. These are five of the designs that I completed my sophomore year.

Junior Year

After one year of design experience under my belt, I was able to be more creative with my pages, I was able to do more art on the page rather than simple designs. I was promoted to Editor-in-Chief and was then able to design the middle spreads of the pages for a couple of issues. I also got to come up with the concepts for the front covers and modeled for a few as well. I think this was the year that I truly felt comfortable with design and was able to teach the incoming editors how to do a page design.

Senior Year

So far this year, I've been able to design both the covers and the middle spreads, after having a year experience of being Editor-in-Chief I feel more comfortable in what I'm able to produce for the paper. Because I'm the only Editor-in-Chief this year I got to define what I wanted for the paper, the first thing that I changed was the format of the paper, we now print our paper in a way that the student body has responded really well too. Being a senior those are the type of things I wanted to do, I wanted to leave a lasting impact that I hope the next year will continue.
